MP Bill Olner's Remembrance message

Video by JOHN JEVONS

A CALL to arms has been made for residents to buy a charity single to help the Royal British Legion.

Confessing he is not a big fan of the X-Factor, Nuneaton MP Bill Olner is keen to get all residents to buy the X-Factor Finalists charity single as all the proceeds are given to the Royal British Legion.

Speaking at the Town Hall following the Remembrance Sunday Parade in Nuneaton, Mr Olner addressed invited guests.

"I said to Gill, who has heard all of my boring speeches, what can I say that is different this year and I must say I am not a big fan of the X-Factor, as a politician I am usually interested in X's on ballot papers," he quipped.

"But the young people in X-Factor have made a new record and they are going to donate all the proceeds to the Royal British Legion and I have to say that record is called the the Hero Inside You and I do have to say the word Hero covers many facets, everyone who has been touched by conflict at any kind of level. If you watch the video that goes with the song, as I did yesterday, you will see returning service personnel and you will see etched on their faces the tragedy of war in some respects and the relief to get back. More importantly you see the other heroes who are actually already back home and the sacrifices they have made doing things on our behalf.

"I know these are very, very simple words Lest We Forget and I don't think we ever will."

He also paid tribute to Jesse Owen, parade marshall, for his tireless work to organise the annual event.

"Jesse is a bit bossy, we all know that but he does a marvellous job and it is a credit to the town that they still allow the townspeople to celebrate, and it may be a strange word I choose, but it is a celebration of the sacrifices that people made so that we can do what we do now," Mr Olner said.

"It wouldn't be a celebration without the Royal British Legion for all of those over the years, and it has been ninety years on Tuesday since the Armistice was signed, and sadly there have been conflicts since where we still need the sacrifice of those men and women.

"My heart also goes out to 30 Signal Regiment, who are really part of this community and it gives me a great deal of pleasure to know that they serve on our behalf." (11/11/2008) Read More [Read More]
