NUNEATON Town manager Kevin Wilkin has told supporters not to get carried away by the team’s strong start to the season.
Boro have played all the early contenders in Blue Square Bet North and some promising results — particularly away from home — have seen them climb to sixth place, one spot outside the play-offs after nine games.
Nuneaton now have a run of six league matches against teams they will be expected to beat, four of which are at home.
That has led to fans discussing promotion prospects and the need to develop the Triton Showers Community Arena should the team get promoted.
However, Wilkin says upcoming games will not be a walk in the park and promotion chat is very much premature.
He said: “Nothing is won or lost in the first month or two of the season. A lot can happen still. There is plenty of excitement but that needs to be tempered with the knowledge we’ve achieved nothing.
“We’ve got a big FA Cup game at home to Coleshill this weekend so we aren’t thinking about play-offs or anything like that.
“Who knows where we’ll we end up? People can dream but we aren’t getting carried away.
“We’ve had a good start and done pretty well against some of the best teams in the league. We’ve got some different tests ahead.
“Teams will come to our place and look to shut up shop I would think in the next few games. We’ll have to break them down and we’ll need the fans to stay patient to do it.
“I’ve said from day one that all these games we’ll play this season will take some winning. Alfreton are top and they have not been winning games easily.
“They’ve sneaked past teams at the bottom of the table by the odd goal. That shows that you’ve got to be right on it every game.
“Obviously some sides are better than others, but you can’t coast to results.” Arguably, Boro’s best results have come on the road at Boston United, Guiseley and Workington. All three games have seen Wilkin use a 3-5-2 formation, but he says that he may use a more attacking system in the weeks to come.
“The onus will be on us to get at teams and break them down. The system we played at Workington is probably best suited to soaking up pressure and hitting teams on the counter attack so that is something we may look at.
“We’ve shown already this season that we can change things around given different situations.
“We are always learning and always progressing. I’m confident there is more to come from the players,” he said.
Wilkin feels Nuneaton supporters will have a key role to play if the team is to pick up the results they are now expected to.
He is calling on the fans to be patient and support the team throughout the next few games.
“We want a vibrant atmosphere at home and we want the fans to make it an intimidating place to play. We get a lot of people who support us at home and we’ll need them to give us a lift at some point and stick with us,” he said.
