AFC Telford United 4
Nuneaton Town 1
NUNEATON Town crashed to their first defeat of the season as they were beaten 4-1 by AFC Telford United yesterday.
Two goals from Phil Trainer plus further strikes from former Boro striker Andy Brown and winger Greg Mills were more than enough for the Blue Square Bet North title contenders.
Justin Marsden pulled a goal back with three minutes to go for his first of the campaign, but it was a consolation. There was even time for Rob Oddy to miss an injury time spot kick.
The game was not without controversy as Nuneaton midfielder Kyle Storer was given his marching orders in the first half after lashing out at Liam Murray with the score 1-0 — the third red card for the team this season.
Boro boss Kevin Wilkin made one change to the side which beat Stalybridge Celtic 2-1 on Saturday as Guy Hadland returned from a one match ban and replaced Wayne Daniel at the back.
Simon Forsdick, Lee Moore and Justin Marsden all returned to their former club.
Nuneaton started brightly and could have taken the lead when Forsdick crossed from the left and Walker got in a glancing header which Ryan Young tipped away with an instinctive save.
It should have been 1-0 to Telford on 19 minutes when the ball was squared across the six yard box and Trainer was presented with what looked like a tap in - only for Alcock to spread himself and make an outstanding block.
The pressure was on though and it told five minutes later when a pass was fired in at Trainer. He headed it up in the air and lashed in a volley which gave Alcock no chance from 12 yards.
Dean may wonder if he could have done better as he was deceived by Trainer’s effective if unusual first touch.
The red card came on 38 minutes when Murray kicked Moore as he was on the ground. Storer reacted wildly and appeared to slap the Telford player as he piled in.
Murray was booked but Storer was sent-off. From a distance it looked like both players could easily have gone with the Boro bench incensed at the decision.
Wilkin was clearly unhappy at half-time as he walked off the pitch referee Mark Duncan in tow.
Telford threw the kitchen sink at Boro at the start of the second half. Trainer and Murray had efforts cleared off the line by Walker and Hadland respectively in the space of 10 seconds.
The ball was never cleared though and Brown glanced in an Alex Meechan cross from six yards to make it 2-0 on 50 minutes.
Wilkin made a swift change swapping Hadland for James Armson and going to 4-3-2. It made little difference though as Telford were happy to protect what they had.
Boro had a half chance when Young was booked for handling the ball outside his area, but Walker fired the free-kick straight at the wall.
The Bucks almost got the third when Jon Adams volleyed a yard wide from 25 yards after 72 minutes.
It mattered not though as Mills made it 3-0 soon after, skipping past a desperate tackle by Stuart Pierpoint and hammering the ball in off the underside of the bar from 12 yards.
Marsden got his goal late on, jinking past Shane Killock before steadying himself and lashing a shot into the bottom corner.
Trainer got a brilliant second goal in stoppage time, hammering a low drive from 30 yards. Alcock had no chance.
Boro had a penalty at the death after a Killock handball. Oddy stepped up but missed as Young tipped onto the post to compound a miserable game for the Boro man.
BUCKS: Young; Salmon, Newton, Rogers (Davies 84), Murray, Killock, Mills, Trainer, Meechan (Lawrie 74), Brown, Adams (John 74); subs not used: Davies, Abbott, Platt
