KEVIN Wilkin is hoping to have agreed new deals with several of his current squad by the end of next week.
Although the final two games of Nuneaton Town’s season ended in disappointment, it was largely a successful season for the Boro, as they made the play-offs for a third successive season.
They ultimately lost in the semifinals to AFC Telford, as well as losing the Birmingham Senior Cup final to Sutton Coldfield Town, but a sixth-place finish in Blue Square Bet North was an admirable achievement for their first season back at this level.
And Wilkin believes that most of his squad showed enough ability over the course of the season to merit a second chance at pushing for promotion.
He said: “I would say that a large proportion of the squad, we’d like them to stay on.
“Negotiations are ongoing and we’ll speak to them as and when we can.
“The lads are going away today, so we won’t be able to speak to everyone this week.
“There’s a few that we’ve offered deals to, and we would expect to see them put pen to paper by the end of next week.”
Interest in top-scorer Kyle Storer is likely to be high after the midfielder netted 15 goals this season, during which he was watched by League Two side Burton Albion.
Wilkin said: “There’s obviously been a lot of interest in some of the lads, but hopefully we can persuade them to stay.
“Like any club, you look to retain your best players.
“But we are aware that there are one or two there whose expectations might be above what we can offer.”
All of the squad are out of contract this summer, but Wilkin did reveal that the club have options on some players which they make take up.
The Boro boss also admitted that he had already spoken to potential new signings, but that he was only at the sounding-out stage of the process at the moment.
He said: “I’ve spoken to a few new players as well, who we think are available, just to see where they are at.”
