The striker’s loan from Mansfield Town is set to be extended until the end of the year, but he is in line to remain with Boro for the rest of the campaign once the formalities are completed.

Mitchley said: “I’m delighted to be staying because I’m playing games. I like to think I’ve done alright and they’ve rewarded me by wanting to keep me.

“I’m more than happy to stay. If I stay to the end of the season then I’d be happy so long as I’m still playing and playing well.” The 22-year-old has scored twice in six games but he could easily have added to that tally having come close countless times in the last three matches.

Mitchley feels luck has deserted him in front of goal, but he is confident he will be back on the scoresheet soon.

“With a bit of luck I could have more goals but I’m not getting that luck. I’ve hit the post and bar and had shots cleared off the line.

“It’ll come eventually and I’ve just got to keep plugging away until it does,” he said.

The former Blackpool striker is good friends with Boro keeper Neil Collett from their time as Mansfield team-mates.

He says Collett should not be blamed for the FA Cup defeat at Nantwich Town after he let in a terrible goal.

Instead, Mitchley says the rest of the team should be culpable as well.

“The lads have said how great he’s been all season and he needs to remember that. It’s one of those mistakes no one wants to make but as a keeper if you make an error like that it counts against you.

“No one blames Neil. It’s one of those things.

“If we’d have scored first that situation would never have happened.

After we went behind we never did enough as a team to pull it back.

“When they were down to 10 we didn’t make the most of it,” he said.

Now Mitchley has turned his attention to this weekend’s trip to Harrogate Town as he feels the team owes manager Kevin Wilkin.

“Every game is tough but we need to bounce back at Harrogate. We need to repay the manager because we didn’t do well for him at Nantwich.

“He deserves more than we gave him there so we need to do it for him and ourselves.

“We need to find consistency if we are going to push for the play-offs.

The quality of the lads here means we should be.

“I don’t know what’s missing at the moment but we need to keep working hard,” he said.
