Boro see Red in triple clash

WORKINGTON and Boro became familiar foes in October as they met three times in the month, twice in Cumbria.

The month began with a Kyle Storer penalty earning a 1-0 league win against the Reds.

A 6-0 FA Cup win against Coleshill Town follow and two days later the two sides were drawn to play each other in the FA Cup.

Justin Marsden scored twice against Coleshill, earning the FA Cup player of the round award and a trip to Wembley to watch the final.

Recent signing Robbie Burns was also on the scoresheet, as was Donovan Simmonds.

Boro scraped past Stafford Rangers in the league with Kyle Storer on target again.

Rangers had struggled all season but with former England goalkeeper Tim Flowers watching from the stand after being made manager, they were hoping for better form.

It was not to work though. Flowers' stay was shortlived and he was replaced by former Leicester City team-mate Matt Elliott.

An early Eddie Nisevic goal set Kevin Wilkin's men on the way to a 1-1 draw with Workington in the FA Cup fourth qualiying round.

The replay saw Gaz Dean plant a header in to earn a 1-0 win and a trip to Lincoln City in the first round proper.

Before that tie could be considered, there was the small matter of a local derby against Hinckley United at home.

The Knitters arrived under a transfer embargo, with their primary concern seemingly on surviving as a club.

Boro went into the game expected to win at a canter and that is how it panned out.

Lee Moore had been in good goal scoring form up to that point of the season as he netted his seventh goal in 16 games.

Young left winger Nisevic was also beginning to enter a purple patch of form, and he scored the second as Boro ended the month in fifth place with 23 points from 11 games.

With the Imps struggling in League Two and Boro riding high two leagues below them, there was genuine belief Kevin Wilkin's men could at least force a replay.

Backed by a vocal travelling support, Boro took the game to their opponents and were given a boost when Clark Kieltie was sent off for picking up two yellow cards in quick succession.

Wilkin, sensing the opportunity to win the tie outright, made an attacking change by replacing defender Guy Hadland with forward Simmonds.

But Boro could not get the goal or even force a clear cut chance. Though they played well, they were beaten by a cruel last minute goal from Albert Jarrett.

After the match Wilkin said: “I guess when the lads are so disappointed to lose that game in the manner we have after competing so well shows how far we have come.

“You've got to be bitterly disappointed.

It was a real opportunity missed.” Boro could easily have gone into their shells after the disappointment.

Instead they went on a threematch winning streak, all three games ending 2-1 in their favour.

First they beat Solihull Moors side who could arguably have got a draw.

As it was, Storer was on the scoresheet again, getting both goals this time.

Eastwood Town were the next to visit and they definitely deserved a draw, but Nuneaton showed their will to win with goals from James Armson and Simmonds.

Boro scraped past Stratford Town as they started their Birmingham Senior Cup defence with a win. The month ended with a narrow FA Trophy defeat, hardly surprising given Nuneaton's generally woeful record in the competition.

Worcester City were the victors as Danny Spencer's first of the season proved to be a consolation.
