Dillon facing European race

MATT DAVIES
CHRIS Dillon is facing a tiring trek across Europe to get back in time for Nuneaton Town’s game at Worcester City tomorrow, kick-off 3pm.

Last season’s top scorer has missed the last two matches because of family a wedding on the Continent. He was set to be back in England by now, but problems with his flight back means he is facing an arduous journey.

Manager Kevin Wilkin said: “Chris isn’t back yet. There’s been a problem with his flight as I believe he booked with one of these travel companies that went bust.

“He’s coming back over land and sea. It isn’t ideal for anyone. We’ll have a chat with him when he gets back to see how he is.

“I would hope he’ll be fine and fit to be in the squad.” Dillon will likely replace striker Danny Spencer on the bench as he is now suspended until October 10 after being banned for three games for his red card against Droylsden, with a 35-day ban starting on Monday for his dismissal against Leamington in pre-season to follow.

Midfielder Tom Bates could well be on his way out of the club, at least temporarily, with a return to Halesowen Town in the pipeline. Wilkin has given him permission to join the Zamaretto League club on dual registration, although the move is yet to go through.

Wilkin has previously hinted that strikers Tom Berwick and Aden Moore could be in line for loan moves, but they could be put on hold due to Spencer’s ban and Dillon’s uncertain travel situation.

Goalkeeper Darren Acton remains on loan at another Zamaretto League side in Brackley Town, while left-back Ed Matthews (hip) is out indefinitely.

Midfielder Kyle Storer’s suspension for his red card against AFC Telford United is yet to kick-in.

Wilkin is set to tap into the knowledge of central defender Wayne Daniel as he looks for a way to beat Worcester.

Daniel spent last season at St George’s Lane and Wilkin is keen to learn all he can about their rivals.

“I’ll be speaking to Wayne. I always try to learn as much as possible about anyone we play.

“Worcester will be a good side. They’ve made a good start to the season after a couple of tough years.

“They are familiar foes of ours and have got some good players,” he said.

Worcester spent last season struggling against relegation in Blue Square South. However, they are currently eighth in Blue Square North with Nuneaton a point and a place better off.

Meanwhile, Wilkin does not believe there is any reason for the team to be lacking confidence after their first defeat of the season at Telford.

“I’ve seen the highlights of the Telford game and I’m not too downhearted. At 0-0 and 1-0 we were right in it but the sending off changed it.

“Telford scored some good goals to their credit. If we play as we have been I’ve every confidence we can get back on track,” he said.
