VANDALS have struck destroying a speed camera on a notoriously dangerous section of road.

The controversial safety device located on the A5 near to the Red Gate junction has been torched.

The arsonists look to have placed a tyre around the camera and filled it with petrol before setting it alight.

Firefighters from Atherstone Station were called out to the incident at 12.30am in the early hours of this morning.

“The 999 call was dealt with by service control at 12.30am on Monday morning,” said a spokesperson for Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service.

“The crew confirmed the speed camera was on fire and used a hose reel to extinguish it.”

This is the second speed camera to be destroyed in the area. Back in March, the lens of the one located on Tuttle Hill in Nuneaton was sprayed with blue paint putting it out of order for some time.
