Town centre store to close its doors for good

Written byby RYAN MERRIMAN

A STORE in Nuneaton town centre will be closing its doors at the weekend.

Staff at the Early Learning Centre (ELC) will be cashing up the tills one final time.

The final day of trading for the shop will be tomorrow, but the shelves are already nearly empty.

As reported in the Nuneaton News, Mothercare, which also owns the ELC, closed its doors back in February and now the sister store is going the same way.

Long-serving workers at the Bridge Street-based shop are sad that it is closing.

Jackie Barton, assistant at the ELC, said: “We are all very sad that it is closing.

“Many of us have been working here for a number of years and we are best friends and now we won’t be seeing each other every day.

“We don’t have much stock left now, but that is the sad thing seeing the shop empty after all the products we had and knew everything about.”

Jackie has been working at the Early Learning Centre for ten years, while her friends and colleagues Julia Wilcox and Marie Collins have both clocked up 15 years service each and thankfully they have all found other jobs.

For a number of years they have been headed up by manager Martin Gilmure.

A spokesperson for Mothercare said that the closure was in line with the current portfolio plan.

They added: “The ELC Nuneaton store on Bridge Street will close on Saturday, April 14, 2012.

“The closure of the store is in line with our current portfolio plan.

“We hope this has not upset any customers and that they will continue to shop at Early Learning Centre at our Mothercare store at Ventura retail park, Tamworth, B78 3HD and via our website www.elc.co.uk 24 hours, 7 days a week.

“Customers can also shop direct from our catalogue 0871 231 3511.”
