SHOCK plans are in place to block 24 hour access to the front desk at Nuneaton's Police Station.
The News has found out that Warwickshire Police Force is considering withdrawing public access to the facility at the Warwickshire Justice Centre in Vicarage Street.
This would mean that residents would not be able to call into the front desk and speak to face-to-face to an enquiry officer any time of the day, any day of the week.
A spokesperson for the force said: "One of the options we are looking at for both the Northern and Southern Justice Centres is the withdrawal of the 24 hour facility although we are still assessing what impact this will have."
Town MP Marcus Jones has reacted with `concern' to the proposal, which he fears could have an impact particularly during evening hours.
"We are in a situation where all organisations in the public sector are going to have to consider what changes they make to sustain their services, although I am concerned in terms of Nuneaton Police Station," he said.
"Nuneaton has a very vibrant late night economy during some nights in the week and definitely at the weekend and this can quite often lead to people needing access to the police station late at night."
He added that he plans to voice his concerns to top cops: "I will certainly be speaking with the chief constable and police authority to raise my concerns during the consultation."
Borough council leader, councillor Dennis Harvey also voiced his concern at a full council meeting, where he pledged to try take action to alleviate the situation.
The announcement comes less than 24 hours after the News revealed that police chiefs plan to re-locate the front desk at Bedworth's Police Station into the nearby Warwickshire County Council-run Kings House.
This proposal has sparked anger in the town, which is also on the verge of losing another emergency service in the shape of the full-time engine at the Fire Station in Park Road.
