A SCOUTING headquarters is set to be razed to the ground and replaced with a purpose built centre.
Ambitious plans are ahead for the 11th Nuneaton (Weddington) Scouts.
The Higham Lane-based HQ are set to be demolished and a brand new building created.
A spokesperson for the group said: “The group now has a membership of over 200 with a range of ages from six to 25.
“The Group Executive Committee were faced with the dilemma that they had buildings which were unable to cope with the volume of activities being undertaken, an infrastructure which was unfit in many ways and a building which had an original lifespan of 30 years was now deteriorating rapidly.
“The decision was taken to demolish the existing buildings and to replace them with dedicated purpose built headquarters which would be capable of meeting the further growth.
“Following a protracted design and planning process, permission was granted to erect a new headquarters and storage facility.”
It is now estimated that the cost of the project will be £250,000.
The spokesperson added: “We recognise that unlike previous projects we are not going to raise this sum solely from our own fundraising efforts.
“We are therefore seeking support from all areas. This will include our own efforts, donations from local businesses and grants.”
To date a staggering £30,000 has been raised from various activities and the group has been promised £80,000 from grants and businesses. But more is still needed to fund the works.
Plans have been circulated to tender and it is now hoped that work will begin this summer with a completion date of September 2013.
“We will be ensuring that there will be no interruption to the activities enjoyed by the young people,” said the spokesperson.
“But we do wish to complete this project as soon as possible.”
The 11th Nuneaton (Weddington) Scout Group was formed in 1950 and started with a small group of people meeting in Weddington Parish Hall.
During the early years the group rapidly developed and moved into a small wooden building on ground leased from Weddington Social Club.
In the late 1960s this building was destroyed by a fire and the group were welcomed back to Weddington Parish Hall.
The then Executive Committee secured a building plot, which is the group’s current base.
Forty years on from occupying the new premises and the group has continued to flourish with an array of sections.
