TRAFFIC congestion and disruption has been caused in and around Nuneaton town centre by work being carried out to a bridge on a main road.
Attleborough Road will be closed until Wednesday as a contractor carries out essential maintenance to the bridge on behalf of Network Rail.
The major artery in and out of town was closed off on Monday, with several people contacting the Nuneaton News claiming to know nothing about it.
One woman who found herself suddenly having to locate an alternate route to pick her daughter up from work, said that everyone seemed to be being caught out by the closure.
“I didn’t realise that the road was closed,” said the Camp Hill resident, who didn’t wish to be named.
“Everyone was turning round looking for another way to go. It’s as if no-one was told.”
A spokesman for Warwickshire County Council explained that it was the responsibility of who owns the bridge to ensure people have proper notice.
“The works are being carried out by a contractor for Network Rail who own the bridge,” he said.
“The county council organised the necessary Temporary Traffic Regulation Order for the road closure, which was advertised in a local paper on the 30th March and 13th April.
“Notices were erected on site ten days before the closure."
The works are to carry out brickwork repairs and install warning chevrons to the railway bridge.
Both Arriva and Stagecoach bus companies have information on their websites about the disruption.
Arriva’s Service 74 has had to be redirected until April 25.
A statement informing customers said: “Attleborough Road in Nuneaton will be closed from its junctions with Anker Steet to Caernarfon Drive to allow works to be completed on the railway bridge.
“Service 74 will be diverted via Coton Road and Avenue Road for the duration of the road closure. The closest bus stops will be in Nuneaton Bus Station or Attleborough Green. Normal route will resume once the closure has been lifted. This may cause some delays to journeys. We apologise for any inconvenience."
Stagecoach services affected by the closure consist of Routes 1, 2, 7 and 56.
“Attleborough Road will be closed from the junction of Anker Street to the junction of Caernarfon Drive to allow for railway bridge repair works to take place,” said a statement.
“Between the dates above routes 1, 2, 7 and 56 will divert via Coton Road and Avenue Road, inbound and outbound for the duration of the closure.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused during this time."
