POLICE are trying to solve the mystery of a body found floating on a busy stretch of canal.
The grim discovery of the body, believed to be that of a woman, was made by an unsuspecting member of the public near a bridge in between Bulkington and Bedworth.
Unconfirmed reports on the social networking site Twitter suggest that the body was found with a bag over its head.
But, at the time of going to press, the police said they did not know how the body came to be in the canal or whether there had been any foul play involved.
Specialist police officers worked to recover the body, which was found close to the now derelict Navigation Inn in Bulkington Road, at approximately 2.30pm.
A spokesperson for Warwickshire Police yesterday confirmed to the News that a body had been pulled from the Coventry Canal but added that it was `early days' in terms of finding out what happened.
"Police are currently working with specialists to recover the body, believed to be a woman, found in the canal between Bulkington and Bedworth," added the spokesperson.
"A member of the public alerted police shortly after 2.30pm today, Thursday, June 2, after seeing the body under the bridge.
"The area around the location is currently sealed off whilst a specialist team recovers the body from the water. The roads around the scene have been closed and the canal near to the scene is also closed.
"Police are treating the death as unexplained at this time and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is under way."
The stretch of canal is among the straightest in the country and passes through the housing estates of Poplar Farm and Coalpit Fields.
